All roads lead to Coonamble June Long-weekend as the annual combined Campdraft and Rodeo takes place. The event , now in its 55th year , takes on a carnival type atmosphere as many former residents, visitors, family and friends as well as competitors and their supporters flock to the town swelling the towns population  and booking out accommodation houses months  before the event begins.  Locally based charitable organizations muster their troops for their best effort at an annual fund raising stint, pitching in to help the committee ensure the combined event runs as smoothly as possible, from manning the entry gates to feeding the hordes.  Landmark was our new naming rights sponsor this year and Andrew Schieb, Manager of Landmark Coonamble was on hand to make presentations over the weekend.

The campdraft entries attracted competitors from three states with Victoria, Queensland and many areas of NSW represented, it was a Hall, Kable , Maytom weekend  with these three riders featuring in the three run-offs required for the Maiden, Novice and Stumpy Timmins Open draft, along with the fact Coonamble hosted the Central West Zone Championships in both arenas there were many prizes on offer including  stallion services, saddle,  bridles  and rugs.  Newmarket saddlery gave a rug to all the campdraft winners.  John Lordan and Geoff Freeman donated and made a bridle for the Ralph Bellamy Open.

A dry weekend was forecast with the Saturday programme commencing  with the Campbelltown City Council sponsored Maiden campdraft, the winner receiving a saddle made by Coonamble saddler Mr. Kevin Rogan. With the whip in his hand, Ben Thompson  from  Jackadgery  adjudicated  on  104 first   round runs. The cattle were loaned by AJF Brien and Sons, Coonamble.  With the programme finished for the day  and  the night air closing in many competitors and committee were grateful for the chance to feed and rug up and then wander over to the rodeo arena to witness some fantastic rough riding before some went back to the yards to scan the next days cattle, others lamented at the bar on the score they should have got or the beast they didn’t choose.  All in all, many were looking forward to testing their skills once again on Sunday.
